Mathletics, made by 3P Learning, is a curriculum practice program for primary and secondary students. Magrid is a language-free program for the early years, focused on the cognitive and number skills that come before formal math.

In this article we look at what the two have in common, where they differ, and which learners each one suits best. Its tasks are shown visually, so no instruction ever needs to be read or heard. Numbers appear as numerals, and sound plays a small, targeted role: a spoken number is used only where the skill itself is linking a number word to its symbol, and teachers choose the language. Read more on our language-free learning page.

This means a child can start straight away, even if they are not yet reading or are still learning the language of the classroom. It is especially useful in multilingual classrooms and early years settings.

Mathletics covers kindergarten to grade 10, roughly ages 5 to 16 [1][4]. Younger students get story-telling and video, and elementary students get animated tutorials with audio support [1]. Navigation, rewards and many activities still rely on reading, which suits confident readers but can be a hurdle for emerging readers or children learning in a second language.

Mathseeds, 3P Learning’s early years program, is the closer match on age: it is built for children aged 3 to 9 [2]. The key difference is language. Mathseeds teaches through lessons and animations, so children need to follow the language those lessons are taught in. Magrid is language-free: every task shows the child what to do, with nothing to read and no instructions to listen to. That means a child can start learning math from day one, whatever language they speak at home and whether or not they can read yet.

Cognitive and visual-spatial skills

Magrid works on two connected skill areas: numerical skills and cognitive skills. The cognitive side includes visual perception, working memory, mental rotation, mental folding, geometry and patterns, and hand-eye coordination. These are the skills children use to picture, move and compare shapes and positions in their mind, and they support later problem-solving and geometry.

This focus comes from Magrid’s origins. The program began as a doctoral project at the University of Luxembourg, with a large set of tasks targeting early visual-spatial and number skills [3].

Mathletics also covers geometry and offers more than 700 problem-solving and reasoning activities [1]. Its main aim, though, is curriculum practice: building fluency in facts, calculations and procedures through engaging activities. It does not treat visual-spatial development as a separate learning goal in the way Magrid does.

Calm, focused and offline

Both programs work offline. Once downloaded, Magrid runs without an internet connection and syncs progress when the device is next online, ideally once a week. The Mathletics student app also has an offline mode for content students have already opened online, and results sync when the connection returns [4].

The bigger difference is the learning environment. Magrid shows one activity at a time, with animated visual cues, no written instructions, no ads and no external links. Children get a short, simple celebration after each set of tasks, and there are no points, avatars or competitions. This calm design can help children who are easily overwhelmed, including many learners with ADHD, autism or sensory sensitivities.

Mathletics takes the opposite approach on purpose. It blends extrinsic rewards such as points, customizable avatars and certificates with the satisfaction of success [1]. Its Live Mathletics area adds head-to-head arithmetic games against other students [4]. Many older students find this motivating. Younger children, or those who learn best in a quieter environment, may find it distracting.

Research foundations

Both programs have evidence behind them, but of different kinds.

Magrid started as research. It grew out of more than ten years of work in neuroscience and child development, led by the University of Luxembourg with university partners in Germany, France and Portugal. There are six published studies so far, with more ongoing. Early studies with preschoolers found that children who trained with Magrid performed significantly better on several measures of early math, including second-language learners [3]. You can find the full list on our Research & Evidence page.

Mathletics was evaluated after launch. An independent study by LearnPlatform looked at students in grades 3 to 5 who actively used Mathletics, and found they outperformed their peers on NWEA MAP math tests [5]. This earned Mathletics an ESSA Level II rating, meaning moderate evidence of effectiveness. Mathseeds also holds an ESSA Level II rating [5].

In short, Mathletics has evidence from US classrooms for primary-age students. Magrid’s evidence focuses on the early years, on cognitive skills, and on children learning in a second language.

Where Magrid stands out

Inclusive by design. Because tasks never depend on reading or listening, Magrid works for children with hearing differences, children with dyslexia, second-language learners and neurodiverse learners alike. Teachers and parents can also set a daily time limit in the app.

Built-in assessment. Pre, mid and post assessments show teachers how each child is progressing and help them spot children who may need extra support early. The right choice depends on your learners.

Mathletics is a strong option for primary and secondary students who read confidently, enjoy points and competition, and need regular practice with the school curriculum.

Magrid is built for the early years. If your children are still learning to read, are learning in a second language, have special educational needs, or learn best in a calm environment, Magrid gives them a way into math that does not depend on language. It also builds the cognitive and visual-spatial skills that later math learning rests on.

The two can also work side by side: Magrid to build strong foundations in the early years, and a curriculum practice program later on.

Want to see Magrid in action? Contact our team to see how Magrid could work for your school.

Frequently Asked Questions

       <div class="e-n-accordion" aria-label="Accordion.
